Future of Recreational Fishing Public Meetings

14 August, 2017
Various

To promote our policy recommendations on recreational fisheries management, The New Zealand Initiative organised a series of public consultation meetings. Randall Bess travelled to five locations in the South Island and nine in the North Island to gather feedback on his recommendations for improving recreational fisheries in New Zealand.

Several hundred people attended the meetings to hear Randall talk about his draft report, The Future Catch.

Following the public consultation, the report’s final recommendations were presented to the new government at the end of the year.

Have your say about the future of fishing. New Zealanders are keen fishers. But they are concerned about decreasing fish stock abundance. They are also concerned that access to stocks, we once took for granted, is increasingly coming under threat.

The New Zealand Initiative shares these concerns and has conducted research both in New Zealand and overseas to find better ways of managing fish stocks important to recreational fishers.

Following the publication of two earlier reports (What’s the Catch? and The Overseas Catch), we will release our draft recommendations for fisheries reform on 1 August.

These public meetings will take place up and down the country. We want to hear from the New Zealand recreational fishing community what they make of our ideas – and contribute their own views and opinions.
Please join us.
