Is democracy in crisis?

It is clear that both Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump hope to take advantage of the level of voter's frustration with America's political system. Looking back since the 2008 GFC, there have been a plethora of political, banking and corporate scandals that's led to burgeoning numbers of fringe political parties. A recent YouGov poll revealed that 43 per cent of young voters under 30 had a favourable view of socialism over capitalism.

Europeans are also continuing to feel the pinch of austerity, high unemployment, and are having to deal with the refugee chaos from the Syrian war. Are these the conditions for political upheaval? What sort of conditions are needed for real change to occur?
