It’s Time to Give Local Councils the Power Back
It’s time local was put back into local government and get rid of National’s “nanny state”, says New Zealand First.
“New Zealand First has been saying this for a long time - councils are voted in to make decisions for their districts without the intervention of the heavy hand of the government,” says New Zealand First Spokesperson for Local Government Ron Mark.
“It’s time the government respected the role of our local councils by allowing them to make decisions that best suit their culture, their communities and their economy.
“It’s about removing the government’s influence from local governance issues.
“We want to see local councils empowered to make better, smarter decisions who can stand on their own two feet.
“Instead the government imposes itself on local councils and residents against their will.
“Dictating to ratepayers, communities and locally elected politicians isn’t working
“We’re pleased to see some common sense from the New Zealand Initiative which is supporting our view that local decision making is for local councils,” says Mr Mark.
