Are subsidies for big productions worth it?

New Zealand has been confirmed, by industry sources, as the primary location for a massive new TV series on Lord of the Rings.

It is being produced by Amazon and it was a toss up between here and Scotland. It will be a 1.5 billion dollar production, but the film industry is a heavily subsidised industry.

Eric Crampton discusses with Wallace Chapman on Radio NZ if the numbers show it's worth having these big productions on our shores.
