An Asda in Manchester has banned under-25s from buying kiwi fruit after Harry Styles, a pop singer who was formerly a member of One Direction, was pelted with the fruit at a concert.

A video of the singer, 23, slipping after stepping on a kiwi at the Hammersmith Apollo has spread around Twitter, leading supermarket Asda to restrict the sale of the fruit.

There is a joke among fans, who pelt him with the fruit while he performs the song "kiwi".

He joked to Nick Grimshaw on The Radio One Breakfast Show that he was thankful he had not been “hit straight on with a kiwi yet”.

An ASDA spokesperson said: “We know our customers love Harry Styles and we feel it’s our duty to protect a fellow Mancunian from any ‘bad kiwis’ amongst us.

“We’d hate to see a repeat of the mishap this evening, so to avoid any slippery situations, we feel this is a necessary measure.”

After he slipped over during a concert earlier this week he told the crowd: "You may have seen me fall earlier during this song. It appeared to be a kiwi.

"That was the culprit, some green seedy mush. Look there's another – this could end up being a problem."

It happened again during his tour in Manchester, when he performed at the city's Apollo stadium.

Subsequently, the shop in Hulme, Manchester will ID anyone looking to buy the green fruit.

Fans have warned each other to stop this behaviour, as there are worries he could be injured if he slips and falls.
