USGS warns people no to roast marshmallows over Hawaii volcano

Roasting marshmallows over the fire is a time honoured tradition, but roasting them over a live volcano takes it to a whole different level.

Hawaiians have been warned not to toast their marshmallows over the erupting Kilauea volcano.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) responded to a twitter user's question who asked if it is safe to roast marshmallows over a volcanic vent.

"Erm, We're going to have to say no, that's not safe. (Please don't try!)," USGS replied.

Not only is it not safe it also wouldn't taste very nice.

"If the vent is emitting a lot of SO2 or H2S, they would taste BAD.

"And if you add sulphuric acid (in vog, for example) to sugar, you get a pretty spectacular reaction," USGS replied.
