An angry plane passenger gave fellow travellers a rude awakening – by stripping naked in protest that his flight was overbooked.

The man was pictured in his birthday suit at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina yesterday giving shocked onlookers an eyeful.

Looking like he had spent some time in the sun, with tan marks on his back and legs, the man had apparently become frustrated because his flight was overbooked.

In pictures shared on Facebook by passengers in the airport, the man was then snapped being carried away by airport security in handcuffs.

According to witnesses, the man was attempting to get on board a US Airways flight to Jamaica early yesterday morning, airlive.net reports.

One witness said he heard a man yelling and sounding very angry.

"He had his clothes on, at that point, and then he started standing there with his arms crossed and hollering at the lady at the desk," Sherry Ketchie told WBTV.

"He stood there for a moment and then started taking off his clothes. I ain't never seen nothing like that in my life."

The man was stood naked on the concourse for about an hour, Ketchie added.

"And that's when I got out my phone and started taking pictures," she said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police confirmed they responded to a "disturbance call where a male was suffering from a medical issue".

Police said the exhibitionist isn't facing any charges over his naked streak.
